Kaltschmid family – a success story
Hospitality with tradition in the Tyrolean Alps
What started in 1962 with a small hotel, is today the largest hotel business operating in Austria. A success story, in the middle of the Tyrolean Alps.
In 1954 the Kaltschmid family acquired the inn Batzenhäusl and rented it out until 1962. After Fritz Kaltschmid had completed his chef and waiter apprenticeship, he took over the business with the age of 19. He ran the restaurant and the hotel with 20 beds and took care of the well-being of his guests together with four employees. Tyrolean dance and mood music had been played there ever since.
Only a year after the takeover, the Batzenhäusl was extended by 20 more beds and in 1964, Fritz Kaltschmid married his wife Sieglinde. Together they have three children: daughter Sieglinde and the sons Fritz and Christian.
Fritz und Sieglinde expanded the hotel business with united forces and bought the hotel Hohe Munde with 25 beds and the Dancing Bar Tenne already in the year 1967. In the following year the Tenne was expanded and the first floor turned into the Restaurant Klause. In 1969 and 1970 the Tenne is turned into the longest bar in Austria, with 75 bar stools and 500 seats. It is until today the most popular bar in Seefeld. In the same year the old wing of the hotel was torn down and a new one built – with 200 beds.
The years between 1973 and 1986 were even more successful. First, the Kaltschmid family bought the Café Columbia with its adjacent property. The building was torn down in 1975 and a new one built, including the discotheque Nachtexpreß.
At the same time the inn Gasthof Stern in Igls was extended and the dance bar Happy Night opened.
In 1981 the Kaltschmids built the Apparthotel Bellevue with 500 beds at the lake and 1985 the hotel Am Römerweg, an apartment hotel with 70 beds.
Then there is a real highlight in 1986: the Grandhotel Hohe Munde and Hotel Columbia were connected and the Ferienhotel Kaltschmid was created. There is a larger lobby for the guests now, an underground car park with 60 parking spaces, an indoor pool with sauna and steam bath on the top floor and 400 beds altogether.
